Book Review: Maggie Brown & Others: Stories Author: Peter Orner Publisher: Little, Brown and Company Publication Date: July 2, Review Date: J From the blurb: “In this powerful and virtuosic collection of interlocking stories, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist takes the form to new heights.   Bristling with the crackling energy of life itself, Maggie Brown & Others marks the most sustained achievement to date for "a master of his form" (New York Times).   "The stories in Peter Orner's Maggie Brown & Others feel eternally human, less like they've been written and rather like they've been drawn by patient hands from an ancient aquifer of memory, longing, and soulful knowing."— Adam Johnson, author of Pulitzer Prize winner The Orphan Master's Son and National Book Award winner Fortune SmilesAuthor: Peter Orner. Here is a list of all of the authors of the Spirit Animals series. Let me just say this book is quite well done. Maggie Brown writes a story that just sweeps you away. You literally are thrown into Australia and through Brown’s words you are chased by the crocodiles, you feel the oppressive humidity, you are right there with the characters as they face countless perilous situations. Ironically, given Orner’s dedication to short-short fiction, he ends Maggie Brown & Others with a page novella, “Walt Kaplan Is Broke.” Granted, some of the chapters are very brief, almost resembling prose poems, and Orner tries hard to give the fading industrial town of Fall River, Massachusetts, some mythological sheen.

Maggie Browne, the pen-name of Margaret Andrewes née Hamer (), was an English author of fiction and non-fiction children's books, who is best known today for Wanted, a King, an Alice in Wonderland-type story.

In MAGGIE BROWN & OTHERS, Peter Orner chronicles people whose lives are at inflection points. Whether it's a first date that turns into a late-night road trip to a séance in an abandoned airplane hangar, or a family's memories of the painful mystery surrounding a forgotten uncle's demise, Orner reveals how our fleeting decisions between kindness and abandonment chase.

If Maggie thought before she acted, she'd be a lot better off. Fortunately for Carolyn Brown's readers, Maggie is a free spirit with a distinct mind of her own who acts before she thinks.

She can handle a six shooter, run a home and perplex the men she charms like no other woman in Dodsworth, Indian Territory. Read MAGGIE'S MISTAKE and fall in /5(5). Maggie Brown & Others Peter Orner. Peter Orner's new book, "Maggie Brown & Others" (Little Brown, release date July 2, ) is superb. In 44 short stories, many of them only 2 to 3 pages long, and one page novella, Orner gently but firmly takes the reader by the hand, introduces vibrant and vital characters in both mundane and exotic settings, and says, "Here's life with all its complexities .
